Q & A: Why Designing for Wellness Begins at Home

Award-winning Garden designer Lynn Hill, joins Mozolowski & Murray to talk about biophilic living, and the power of connecting home and garden.

At Mozolowski & Murray, our design philosophy has always gone far beyond bricks and mortar. For over 30 years, we’ve led the way in creating architectural solutions that foster calm, connect people with nature, and support true wellbeing at home. As biophilic design continues to gain momentum, we invited award-winning garden designer Lynn Hill to share her insights on how landscaping and architecture can work in harmony to enrich everyday living.

Q: Lynn, biophilic design is a key principle behind many Mozolowski & Murray projects. How would you describe its value in today’s homes?

It’s incredibly valuable, and it’s wonderful to see how Mozolowski & Murray are embedding biophilic thinking directly into their architecture. Biophilic design is rooted in our natural desire to connect with nature. Whether that’s through light-filled interiors, views of greenery, or seamless transitions between inside and out, it’s all about creating spaces that feel restorative and uplifting.

For homeowners, the true value lies in how these thoughtful design choices elevate everyday wellbeing. By fostering a deeper connection with nature, we’re creating living environments that not only look beautiful but also support how people truly want to feel in their homes

Q: Our clients often tell us that their new garden-connected spaces help them feel calmer, more focused, and even healthier. From your perspective, why does this connection matter so much?

Because it works! Research has consistently shown that interaction with natural elements, even just visually, reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, and improves sleep. When designing a garden, I don’t see it as separate, I see it as another room with purpose. Even a framed view from a kitchen or a small patio nook can become an extension of your home’s atmosphere.

What I love about Mozolowski & Murray’s approach is that you design with intention. Whether it’s a sunroom, conservatory, orangery, or garden structure, these spaces become immersive, drawing people into nature without ever having to leave home. This can be transformational for everyday wellbeing.

Q: When we design new structures, we consider flow, insulation, glazing, and usability year-round. How does your garden design complement this?

My work is about completing the picture. When I design a garden that connects to one of your structures, I know it’s going to be used and enjoyed, not just looked at. I select plants that evolve with the seasons, provide visual interest all year, and require minimal uptake. I also think about texture, light, privacy, and movement, from grasses that sway and water features, to lifestyle spaces and wildlife. It’s these elements that create a sensory experience and a sense of retreat right at home.

The result is a space that’s not only beautiful, but in sync with the comfort and quality your clients already expect from Mozolowski & Murray.

Q: Many of our clients aren’t just investing in space — they’re investing in lifestyle. What principles do you use to support that kind of wellness-led design?

I focus on simplicity, texture, and rhythm. it’s about creating places where people can pause, enjoy natural light, hear water, or watch the garden evolve through the seasons.

These sensory elements invite people to slow down and connect with their environment in a really meaningful way. But the real magic happens when this is part of a cohesive, integrated design, and that’s exactly why working with companies like Mozolowski & Murray is such a natural fit.

Their structures already embrace light, flow, and purpose, which allows the garden to become an intentional extension of the home. Your clients aren’t just extending their properties, they’re investing in a lifestyle that places real value on how they want to live, feel, and connect each day.

Q: What advice would you give to homeowners who are considering a Mozolowski & Murray structure and want to make the most of their garden connection?

Think beyond the immediate build and start envisioning how your indoor and outdoor spaces can complement each other long-term. One of the simplest yet most transformative things you can do is ask, “What will I see, hear, or feel from this room once it's built?” Even a single, beautifully framed view, whether it's a flowering border, a sculptural tree, or a seating area, can completely elevate how the space is experienced.

By working with Mozolowski & Murray, you’re already starting from a position of strength. Their use of natural light, architectural flow, and thermal comfort creates the perfect foundation for biophilic living. So, it’s about enhancing that, not competing with it.

Consider planting schemes that evolve with the seasons, add sensory interest, and reflect the architectural lines of the space. Think about movement, the sway and flickering light through leafy trees or the gentle sound of water. These elements don’t just look beautiful; they create a sensory experience that draws you outside and calms you inside.

I always encourage clients to think of their garden not just as an addition, but as a continuation of their home. With Mozolowski & Murray’s structures, that transition is seamless, and with the right planting and layout, your whole property begins to function as one beautifully cohesive and nurturing environment.
